Listening to Las Vegas

An exploration of the intense sonic environment of Las Vegas. Each casino attempts to extend its internal broadcasted soundscape of pleasant top forty gambling music beyond its walls and into the streets. Arrays of embedded speakers extend along boardwalks and elevated pathways keeping the charged atmosphere ratcheted up to 11. Actual physical cross fades are created as the gamblers move from the limits of one casino to the next through the web of connections, moving from one pre-programmed soundscape to the next.

It doesn’t sound like a duck, but we may have found a new soundscape typology.

Started in 2004, this ongoing research project currently part of an Independent Study project supervised by Dr. Chris Salter, Department of Computational Arts, Concordia University.
